Read John 21.1-19 DevotionIn this image, the background texture is fish scales, which I have highlighted with the different colours. This is to symbolise the abundance of fish which the disciples caught in the miracle. Then the circle of waves in the centre signifies the tumult the disciples probably felt at this time. They clearly didn’t really know what to do with themselves, hence they'd gone back home. They may have felt like they’d failed Jesus, and now they’d failed at fishing too. They were scared, lonely, grieving, guilty, etc. It also pictures the desperate splashing around as Peter leaps into the lake, wanting to get to Jesus immediately. The hands reaching out and reaching down are Peter’s and Jesus’. Though the different Greek words for ‘love’ in this passage may just be natural variance (click 'Read More' or see below for a brief explanation of what I think about these words!), I think it describes Jesus as one who reaches down into the messy, splashy, turmoil of human lives, and meets people where they are and with what they can give at that moment. Where have you seen God's abundance in your life?
